Seth Godin Punched Me in the Face
Not literally, but figuratively. And hard.
You see, one of my biggest problems in life revolves around “I don’t feel like it.” Seth Godin, writer and thinker extraordinaire, talked about just this very thing yesterday, and really nailed it.
What’s it?
Why do you need to feel like something in order to do the work? They call it work because it’s difficult, not because it’s something you need to feel like.
It’s a short post, over at http://bit.ly/aWKJbA . Highly recommended… and I’d encourage you to expand the thought beyond just work too. Whether it’s cleaning up your house, organizing your paperwork, exercising, or any other form of self-discipline, the issue is not what you feel like, it’s what you decide to do.
Or, to quote Yoda, “Do or do not. There is no try.”
Thanks a lot. I was looking forward to a leisurely morning. Instead I just unloaded the dishwasher and cleaned up a bit. I even fed our son breakfast. Okay, I would have done that last one anyway.
This is a fabulous reminder that discipline takes, well, discipline. I’m working on it, even though I don’t feel like it.
This morning I read an article on Money Saving Mom. She quotes this guy: “You can’t change anything when your ‘want-to’ is broken.” -Kevin Catalyst
She is, of course, talking about saving money on groceries, but it was a good tie-in to your post today, and applicable to nearly everything.

I remember a ‘Fresh Words’ column by Johny P a few years back – What to do when your Ought to and your Want to don’t match – or words to that effect.
Thanks young’uns for the great reminders
