Things to sober you up as a parent

Tim Challies pointed to this study about the impact of parents on the faith of young adults.

Of the many influences on emerging adults, “One of the most powerful factors was the religious lives of their parents-how often they attended religious services, how important religious faith was in their own lives, and so on”

That’s the sort of thing that makes me want to redouble my efforts with my child. Every little thing you do as a parent has an impact. That should be every bit as scary as it sounds.

Great article. I work with high schoolers, and agree 100%. Popular media insists teens are a lost cause — and yet they’re just finding their way like everyone else. And they’re desperate for guidance.

    Sobering. And empowering.

Haven’t read the article yet, but I do hope that they include the fact that nothing parents do is guaranteed to result in their children choosing to follow after God.

  3. Thanks Llama Momma (funny how that rhymes out loud even though it doesn’t on paper)… I think sobering is definitely a good word.

Thou wise hermit — I think you’ll find that the article has sufficient nuance. I agree totally — the truism of the proverbs is, sadly, a truism: Train up a child in the way he should go and sometimes he’ll still mess it up. The article just explains that one of the biggest impacts on a teen (emerging adult, I like that)’s faith is his or her parents. Not that it’s a sure thing.
